Recovery Boiler

137 tons of recovery boiler transported as Breakbulk cargo from Spain to Mexico

For several years Tuscor Lloyds has worked with the paper industry providing regular container transport services (LCL and FCL). This time Tuscor Lloyds was asked to transport a project cargo: a recovery boiler weighing 137 tons from Spain to Mexico.

The cargo which consisted of five Break Bulk pieces and two 40ft Open Top SOC Containers (holding the smaller pieces of the recovery boiler) was collected in Madrid and Toledo, Spain where its transport by road to the port of Bilbao (260 miles north) begun.

After a 30 day transit period, the vessel arrived at the Port of Altamira, Mexico, where the Break Bulk cargo was unloaded using a heavy lift crane and then was loaded and secured to low loader trailers for further transport by road to Monterrey Nuevo León, Mexico (742 miles north of Altamira).

Using this method and schedule, Tuscor Lloyds successfully delivered the recovery boiler to the customer within the budget and time schedule.

Once the out of gauge transport by road was completed at the port of Bilbao, the cargo was taken quay side, next to the multipurpose vessel. Some of the break bulk cargo pieces weighed in at more than 46 tons each and these required a specialist heavy lift crane to load the cargo to the vessel.

Once loaded in the vessel, the cargo was secured using heavy duty ratchet straps, steel chains and wooden / steel wedges in order to keep all the pieces fixed and secured during its transatlantic transport to the Port of Altamira in Mexico.
